Renton's tree thresholds (RMC 4-4-130)
Renton's tree rules under RMC 4-4-130 (amended by Ordinance 6160, June 16, 2025) define:
- Significant tree: DBH of at least 6 inches (8 inches for alder or cottonwood).
- Landmark tree: DBH of 24 inches or greater (except Big Leaf Maples, Black Cottonwoods, and Red Alder).
A Routine Vegetation Management Permit (RVMP) is required for:
- Removal of any landmark tree.
- Removal of more than 2 significant trees per year.
Removing up to 2 significant trees per year does not require a permit under certain conditions — confirm the current exception criteria with Renton CED.
How to handle it
For most additions, the designer flags any regulated tree on the survey and produces a tree-protection plan with the permit submittal. Renton CED reviews it as part of the main application.
If a significant tree has to be removed, the path is more involved: documentation of justification, replacement planting per the RMC formula. Removal is rarely worth it on a single-story addition; redesign around the tree if feasible.
When you can skip this concern
A lot with no significant or landmark trees, or where construction activity stays entirely clear of any tree's drip line, passes through tree review without comment.
