Who handles sewer in Renton
Most Renton addresses inside the city limits are served by City of Renton Public Works. Sewer connection permits and utility modifications go through Renton's Permit Services division (contact: [email protected], 425-430-7200, Renton City Hall 6th Floor).
However, parts of the Renton area are served by the Soos Creek Water and Sewer District (SCWSD), which is generally bounded on the north by the City of Renton at the Cedar River Pipeline. If your property is south of the Cedar River or in the southeast Renton area, check whether SCWSD or another water district handles your sewer. SCWSD customer service: 253-630-9900. Water District 90 is also in the area at 15606 SE 128th St, Renton WA 98059.
Confirm your utility service providers at the start of the project — address-specific lookup is the only reliable method.
When a utility permit is needed
A utility permit is required for:
- Alterations, repairs, expansions, or new connections to the sewer or water system.
- Any work in the public right-of-way.
A whole-house remodel that doesn't change the footprint's plumbing load typically doesn't require a new sewer connection permit. An addition that adds bathrooms or a new kitchen may require confirmation from Public Works. Ask Renton Public Works at permit application whether a King County Metro connection charge applies to your parcel and whether a side-sewer as-built drawing is required at permit closeout for your scope.
