How Portland handles ADU addresses
Portland typically assigns ADU addresses as fractional or letter suffixes: 1234 NE Some St for the main house, 1234 1/2 NE Some St (or 1234A) for the DADU. PP&D's addressing team sets the exact convention.
You request address assignment through PP&D either at permit submittal or during construction. The address is finalized before the COO.
Once you have the address, register it with:
- USPS. Visit your local post office or file a Form 1583 to set up mail delivery.
- 911. Multnomah County's emergency services need the address routed correctly. Usually automatic from PP&D's submission, but verify by calling the non-emergency line and asking what address they show for the structure.
- Multnomah County Assessment & Taxation. The DADU adds taxable value. The assessor will eventually catch it; getting ahead of it avoids back-tax surprises.
- Utilities. PWB, BES, PGE, NW Natural — set up new accounts or sub-accounts as needed.
